Back to Basic: Literacy in Science
Science instruction in the Key Stage 1 and 2 of the K12 curriculum allows immense learning opportunities of not only the prescribed competencies but also to develop basic literacy tools of science. Learning what others have discovered about the world and sharing one’s own discoveries can be powerful motivators for learning to read, write and speak effectively. Science teachers’ intentional combination of science instruction and literacy could spell a big difference as we are in the learning recovery phase.
"As we pace our steps towards scientific literacy, let us take sure footing by going to the basics, that is taking into account literacy in Science."

DR. ARLON P. CADIZ
My warmest congratulations to the editorial team of the ‘The Compass’, a bi-annual electronic journal in science, for having successfully launched the maiden issue of the e-Journal in the Region. This humble endeavor started as a dream and now a reality by giving an opportunity to science teachers, through this kind of electronic platform, to share their teaching and learning experiences, innovations, and research outputs. The effort and courage of the teachers of the articles that center on various themes of the journal reflect one of the true relevance and essence of being a science educator in sharing what they know, do, and think for the benefit of their learners.
My sincerest and deepest gratitude to our mentors, the officials from the Department of Education Regional Office III, Dr. May B. Eclar, Dr. Rhoda T. Razon, and Dr. Librada M. Rubio, for their support and guidance to make this humble work a possible one. May this success continuously serve as an inspiration to the editorial team to maintain the good standards of ensuring the quality of articles submitted, evaluated, and peer reviewed.

Thank you so much!
To God be the Glory always!
